Kyeema supporting Nature-based solutions to climate change
in Pacific Island Communities
After an 8-month process, we are proud to announce our Nature-based solution project in the Pacific. The project will be conducted in Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Samoa and Kiribati and is designed help save compromised coral reef ecosystems through climate adaptation and alternative livelihoods training. With a focus on capacity building, Kyeema, Corals for Conservation (C4C) and Just World Partnerships (JWP) will support young indigenous scientists from six PICs and community leaders from Fiji (Malolo) and PNG (Yule Island) to help restore compromised coral reef (and linked mangroves) and maintain the protective climate-related services they provide as a Nature-based solution. We will promote and support measurable co-benefits for people and nature.
The marine science workshop will kick off training in August and the community-based workshop will follow in October. These sessions will run in Fiji at Malolo Island and its surrounding communities. In November, a second community-based training workshop will be hosted in PNG for Yule Island communities.
This project is supported by the Australian Government and World Wildlife Fund-Australia through Climate Resilient by Nature (CRxN). CRxN is a new initiative advancing equitable nature-based solutions to climate change in the Indo-Pacific. CRxN supports projects that work with communities to restore and protect critical ecosystems, build sustainable livelihoods, and increase resilience to climate shocks.
