Youth-Led Poultry Farming: Isac’s Story of Entrepreneurship
Meet Isac, a 24-year-old from Mali village in Mozambique who’s building something special, one egg at a time.
Back in 2022, Isac’s mum, Eugenia, received 30 Boschveld chicks through our initiative supporting women to build sustainable livelihoods in Mozambique. The program, made possible with support from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), gave her the opportunity to start her own small poultry business.
However, when she was no longer able to care for the chickens on her own, Isac who was unemployed at the time stepped in to help out.
What started as a small favour for his mum quickly turned into something bigger. Isac saw the potential and ran with it. Since taking over, he’s grown the family’s poultry venture into a thriving small business. He now sells day-old chicks, fertile eggs, and cocks all while managing a flock of 90 chickens and covering his own feed costs. Between January and November last year alone, he earned over 84,000 MZN (around USD $1,300).
Isac’s not just good with chickens, he’s got a real talent for marketing, too. He uses Facebook and WhatsApp groups like Moz-Agribusiness to share photos, promote his products, and chat directly with customers. That online savvy has helped him build trust and boost sales beyond his own community.
With demand growing, he’s invested in a 504-egg incubator to scale up production and he’s already planning to build a better chicken house to keep things moving forward.
Isac’s journey is a powerful example of family resilience in action. With a little support from Kyeema and a whole lot of drive, he’s turned a challenge into a thriving business and an exciting future.
Isac’s experience shows what’s possible when youth are empowered to take the lead. It’s a good reminder to keep looking for ways to support young entrepreneurs already stepping up in their communities.
