  • Marker-assisted breeding of selected native chickens in Mozambique and Uganda

In partnership with University Eduardo Mondlane, Kyeema is working to increase the quantity and quality of chicken products in the market, which will result in better household nutrition and income for farmers in Mozambique and Uganda.

This project aims to develop a more productive native chicken with high body weight and egg production while also maintaining village chicken characteristics like broodiness.

This project will contribute to better livelihoods of chicken farmers who are mainly women and youth.

Our partners

What are we doing?

  1. Baseline survey to establish available native chicken ecotypes and characterise their morphometric and molecular features;
  2. Collect blood samples of native chickens, extract, genotype and sequence DNA; Identify ecotypes with genes for fast growth and high egg production
  3. Establish four breeding sites; assemble breeding flocks of native chickens; Conduct matings and monitor performance of native and crossbred chickens.
  4. Identify, characterise available Scavenging Feed Resource (SFR) for chickens; Assess SFR and Formulate feeds based on SFR and evaluate performance of native chickens fed SFR
  5. Develop and test technology delivery models for scaling up improved chickens and share information on improved chickens.

Will this work contribute to ongoing change?

The establishment of project management structures at the universities coupled with subsequent establishment of project coordination unit will provide structures which will support continued engagement between the university, the research institutions and the poultry smallholders. This will ensure continued access to technologies as well as continued linkage with the communities.

Further, multi-stakeholder dialogue workshops will be initiated to involve relevant people in the project. The project will recruit and engage ‘Community Champions’ who will be empowered to become producers to fill in the current vacuum of lack of adequate suppliers of improved chicken breeds that are adapted to local environmental conditions.

We are also measuring our outcomes against indicators set out for the specific globally recognised sustainable development goals for 2030.
