  • Implementation and operation of agricultural livelihoods programs, Total LNG Resettlement Project

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Kyeema have formed a consortium to implement an agricultural livelihoods program tendered by Total for the LNG resettlement project, Mozambique Area 1. The consortium is implementing livelihood restoration programs that will minimise the negative impact of loss of agricultural land, property and livelihoods by households from five villages in Afungi Peninsula who will be affected by the development of an offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Palma district, Cabo Delgado. 

The overall goal of the agricultural livelihood restoration programs is to ensure that all physically and economically displaced households achieve sustainable levels of food security within 18 months after they have been relocated.

Our partners

What are we doing?

Kyeema is responsible for the following:

  1. Establish a livestock relocation program taking into consideration the Livestock Health Regulations of the Republic of Mozambique;
  2. Improved village poultry production, Newcastle disease control and poultry husbandry;
  3. Improved small ruminant production (goats);
  4. Pilot introduction of chickens and ducks involving vulnerable women’s groups; and
  5. Establish a demonstration plot of improved high protein pasture and train farmers to implement their own.

Regular ND vaccination campaigns

Improved management and marketing of small ruminants established

Empowered women with increase income through the sale of guinea fowl and duck products

Will this work contribute to ongoing change?

This project will continue until May 2023. During this time, Kyeema will work with the displaced households to ensure they achieve sustainable levels of food security.
